About NASA

Your rocket is partially filled with water, which it squirts out at its rear end to lift itself up in the air. The faster the water comes out (at higher acceleration), the higher the rocket gets lifted. The special water bottle launcher allows you to add air to your bottle rocket.

Materials and Equipment

As you pump air into the bottle the pressure inside the bottle builds up until the force of the air pushing on the water is enough to force the cork out of the end of the bottle. The water rushes out of the bottle in one direction whilst the bottle pushes back in the other. Rockets are vehicles that obtain their forward thrust—the force that pushes the rocket forward—from a reaction engine. In other words, rockets push themselves forward by ejecting mass (that shoots backward) at high speed from their rear end.

In human history, it took some time and lots of testing to really understand how rockets fly. Would you rather have a high-flying, straight-shooting rocket or a rocket that flies end-over-end, willy-nilly, and crashes to the ground right after you launch it? NASA certainly doesn’t want its rockets coming down before they are supposed to—but sometimes they do. The activity also requires some non-expendable (reusable) items such as a rocket launcher and teacher-made demo items; see the Materials List for details. When you cranked up the pressure inside the bottle from 20 psi to 40 psi, your rocket probably reached a higher altitude. We are active participants in our community, our industry, and in the businesses of our clients.

This tutorial shows how to build and launch a bottle rocket. Students explore motion, rockets and rocket motion while assisting Spacewoman Tess, Spaceman Rohan and Maya in their explorations. First they learn some basic facts about vehicles, rockets and why we use them. Then, they discover that the motion of all objects—including the flight of a rocket and mo... Glue or tape the nose cone to the top of the rocket.Adding wieght to the nose cone may help, It will move the centre of gravity higher, thus being more stable. There is always risk involved when subjecting bottles to high pressure.

Take your next bottle with the bottom cut off and place it on top of the previous bottle. Take one of your bottles (with the removed bottom) and fit it over the BOTTOM BOTTLE. The spouts of the bottles will be facing away from one another.

While it may be tempting to choose a heavier bottle, as it may seem sturdier, a lighter bottle is actually more desirable. The lighter the bottle, the less weight the rocket has to carry, allowing for a greater acceleration and higher launch speed. So, when selecting a 2-liter bottle for your bottle rocket, prioritize durability, streamlined design, and lightweight construction for the best results. In this science project, you will measure the pressure in the bottle in pounds per square inch (psi) because that is the units of measurement on a bicycle pump. However, psi is not a metric unit and in science the metric system is used. If your teacher would like you to use the metric system, then you will need to record the pressure in pascals (Pa) also known as newtons per square meter (N/m2).

Step 2: Cut Bottles

With the high pressure, the hoses have the potential to leak. This can be fixed by adding a few rubber bands (wrapped around) where the water or air is leaking to help create a better seal. By adding a pointy, sleek nose cone, you made the rocket more aerodynamic.

You are free to investigate further, do research and gather background information on the DIY mechanism. The various parts of a rocket, especially the nose cone, nozzle and fins, need careful designing for aerodynamical grace. The team built a simple, yet personalized experience that provides information, convenience, and utility that guest desire while both on and off property. Keep in mind, you don't want your decorations to hinder the flight of your rocket.

The more air you add, the more this air pushes on the water. Birche’s Elementary School 5th grade classes conducted scientific studies of bottle rockets in the fall of 2009. They were joined in the fall of 2011 by students and teachers at Whitman Elementary.

The problem is, how do we establish the pivot point if we cannot attach it to a fixed object (such as a wind vane pivot attached to a roof)? In a free-flying object, the COM acts as the natural point of rotation and is, therefore, a pivot point. Placing the COM towards the front (by adding weight to the nose) and by placing the COD toward the back (by adding fins to the tail) creates the necessary separation. Over the next few days, we’re going to build some simple rockets using two-liter soda bottles—and just like NASA engineers—we want them to fly straight and far. In rocketry, the force that pushes the rocket forward is called thrust, and the air resistance is called drag.

By adding fins—even small fins—you probably noticed the rocket took a straighter path to its highest point (the apogee), and no longer tumbled down, but flew straight down. If you’d like to learn more about model rockets, check out our in-depth interview with Jessie Antonellis-John. At Bottle Rocket, inclusion and diversity are top priorities. Our goal is a welcoming community where everyone feels heard and supported, free to be their authentic selves. It’s our ongoing mission to hire and retain the best talent on earth. We are one team – working together to create things that aren’t possible alone.

After the bottle is secured to the launch kit, pressurize the bottle. The launch kit has a valve for pumping up the bottle (like you would find on a bicycle). You could use a bicycle tire pump, but it takes a lot of work and the time between launches increases. If you use an air compressor, getting the pressure up to around 90 psi only takes about 10 seconds. Rockets are vehicles that obtain their forward thrust from a reaction engine. You can use our RocketModeler III computer program to predict the flight characteristics of your bottle rocket.

There are many different types of model rockets and one of the first and simplest type of rocket that a student encounters is the bottle rocket. We have an entire section of the Beginner’s Guide to Rockets, devoted to the science and math of bottle rockets. There are special web pages for teachers to align bottle rocket activities with National Math and Science Standards.

Through consistency, identity, design and messaging, our strategies provide a clear focus for competitive edge. We help clients maintain that edge by building effective campaigns and driving strong audience connections across all touch-points. The mechanisim I use to stage my rocket is different to Air Commands or any other two stage water rocket.I have tried to make the stager compact. The stager can link to a servo or a pressure switch. The instructions for it are on the next few steps. Another crucial factor to consider is the shape of the bottle. Look for a bottle with a streamlined design, as this will reduce air resistance and improve the rocket's aerodynamics.
