But the $900 billion emergency package passed before Christmas and reluctantly signed by President Donald Trump late Sunday, Dec. 27, includes rental assistance, enhanced unemployment benefits and an extension of the eviction moratorium to Jan. 31, 2021.

Groups of students can work together with a teacher to learn the fundamentals. In the figure at the top of this page, we show teachers and students from two different schools involved with bottle rocket activities. The center photo comes from Sue Simmons of Birche’s Elementary School in Turnersville, New Jersey. Mrs. Simmons and her students are preparing a rocket for launch at the pad. This simple mini-activity illustrates why water is a more effective propellant than air. Expect rocket designs to be nearly identical for distance and hang time, except for hang time rockets that add parachutes. The experiment is based on Newton’s 3rd law that states every action has an equal and opposite reaction. When air is pumped inside the bottle air pressure builds up and that increases the water pressure forcing it to come out downwards.
So grab a 2-Liter bottle, gather your supplies, and get ready to ignite your creativity and master the art of 2-Liter bottle rockets like never before. Parachutes are used to slow down the fall of a rocket to reduce the risk of damaging the rocket as it touches the ground. For a bottle rocket, air resistance has to knock off the nose cone, causing the suspension lines to unravel and the parachute to unfold. This takes time, so if your rocket does not reach enough altitude, your parachute might not have enough time to open up and do its job. Some design changes, like shorter suspension lines, lightweight material, and neat folding techniques, can help speed up the deployment of your parachute.
Air pressure, or how hard the air presses outward on the inside of the bottle, builds up in the bottle and you might even see the bottle bulge out a little. A water rocket is propelled by pressurised air forcing water down though a nozzle. The rocket will only go 50 feet more because of the added mass. A two stage rocket will work better because it would not have to carry the full payload on all of its flight. When it comes to choosing the best 2-liter bottle for a bottle rocket, durability is key.

As you pump air into the bottle the pressure inside the bottle builds up until the force of the air pushing on the water is enough to force the cork out of the end of the bottle. The water rushes out of the bottle in one direction whilst the bottle pushes back in the other. Rockets are vehicles that obtain their forward thrust—the force that pushes the rocket forward—from a reaction engine. In other words, rockets push themselves forward by ejecting mass (that shoots backward) at high speed from their rear end.

While it may be tempting to choose a heavier bottle, as it may seem sturdier, a lighter bottle is actually more desirable. The lighter the bottle, the less weight the rocket has to carry, allowing for a greater acceleration and higher launch speed. So, when selecting a 2-liter bottle for your bottle rocket, prioritize durability, streamlined design, and lightweight construction for the best results. In this science project, you will measure the pressure in the bottle in pounds per square inch (psi) because that is the units of measurement on a bicycle pump. However, psi is not a metric unit and in science the metric system is used. If your teacher would like you to use the metric system, then you will need to record the pressure in pascals (Pa) also known as newtons per square meter (N/m2).
Step 2: Cut Bottles
With the high pressure, the hoses have the potential to leak. This can be fixed by adding a few rubber bands (wrapped around) where the water or air is leaking to help create a better seal. By adding a pointy, sleek nose cone, you made the rocket more aerodynamic.

The various parts of a rocket, especially the nose cone, nozzle and fins, need careful designing for aerodynamical grace. The total number of contested primaries (with more than one candidate) was also a decade-low. In 2024, there were 36 contested primaries (16 Democratic and 20 Republican) out of a possible 456, a rate of 7.9%. This was the lowest number since Ballotpedia began tracking these data in 2010. Thirty-nine Democrats had voted “no” on Friday on the rule to allow the foreign aid package to come to the House floor, a target that progressives just missed on Saturday on the Israel bill. Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself. While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill. They said before the vote that they opposed unfettered aid to Israel that could be used in its offensive in Gaza.
